Toyokuni Coffee, located in Miyakojima-ku, Osaka, is a cafe that was renovated from a 93 -year-old traditional Japanese house. Built in the early Showa period, the building still retains a strong sense of its past, evoking nostalgic feelings in visitors.

Last weekend, I went to Toyokuni Coffee with a friend.

When you enter the shop, you'll find a retro space with a warm wooden feel. Antique tools and vintage furniture are lined up under amber lighting, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. When you sit down in the tatami-floored seating area and enjoy the atmosphere of the shop, enveloped in the scent of incense and tatami mats, you'll feel as if you've traveled back in time.

History of buildings constructed in the early Showa period

The Toyokuni Coffee building was built in the early Showa period, during the recession following World War I and the recovery from the Great Kanto Earthquake. At the time, Miyakojima was developing as a residential area, and this building was likely one of the houses that supported the lives of the local people.

This was also the time when modern culture began to flow in, and it is characterized by the incorporation of Western architectural styles into traditional Japanese houses. In addition to tatami rooms, there may have been rooms with wooden floors and reception rooms.
